Our dedicated team of skin care professionals specializes in:
Skin Cancer detection, removal and prevention
Dr. Street performs Mohs surgery, a skin cancer removal technique which uses microscopy to remove only the cancerous tissue, leaving healthy tissue intact and unharmed. This precise method minimizes the chance of cancer regrowth, and lessens the likelihood of scarring or disfigurement. This specialized surgery has the distinction of providing the highest skin cancer cure rate - up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed - as well as the most pleasing cosmetic results.
Dr. Street is the only fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon in mid-Michigan – she is the local skin cancer expert!
Basal and Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- Are the most common forms of skin cancer
- If detected early, these cancers have a better than 95% cure rate
Melanoma
- Is the most deadly form of skin cancer
- Is due to uncontrollable growth of pigment-producing tanning cells
- May suddenly appear without warning, but can also develop from or near a mole
- May spread, making treatment of unusual moles essential
- Follow the ABCDE rule when looking for irregular moles & melanoma:
- Asymmetry
- irregular Borders
- Color is not uniform
- Diameter is 6mm or more
- sudden Elevation
Skin Cancer Protection
- Examine your skin and see your dermatologist regularly, especially if there is a personal or family history of unusual moles or skin cancer
- Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm, when the sun rays are strong
- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher
- Wear protective clothing, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and do not tan
Skin Cancer Treatment
A dermatologist will select the most appropriate treatment depending on the location, size, type and severity of the skin cancer, which may include scraping, excision and suturing, freezing with liquid nitrogen or Mohs micrographic surgery, an advanced surgical technique performed by a highly trained specialist.
Mohs surgery provides the highest cure rate, requires only local anesthesia and minimizes scarring. The cancerous skin is surgically removed, oriented, and processed in the laboratory. These cancerous "roots" are precisely mapped out one layer at a time and viewed under the microscope until a tumor-free level is reached. As the first African American female Mohs surgeon in the country, Dr Street uses this state of the art treatment for recurrent skin cancers in high risk locations and aggressive tumors that have a higher rate of spreading.
Acne treatment and reduction
Acne is a term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Typically acne usually begins in puberty, but it is not restricted to any age group. Young children, adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s can get acne.
Acne Care and Treatment
Establish a regular cleansing routine of cleansing the face twice a day to help prevent acne. Gently wash the skin with a mild cleanser that will exfoliate (remove dead cell layers) and help unclog the pores. Use a mild astringent and an oil-free moisturizer. Topical benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid products are available without a prescription and are known to improve acne. Antibiotics taken orally are often prescribed for moderate or severe cases. Isotretinoin (Accutane) is used for more stubborn and cystic acne. To prevent scarring from acne, seek treatment early and do not pick the skin.
Rosacea
Rosacea may have an acne component (acne rosacea) and include persistent redness of the face, neck, and chest. Combination treatments of medication, facials, and laser procedures effectively reduce the condition. We successfully manage acne by integrating our medical and med spa services to thoroughly improve your skin.
Mole and wart examination and treatment
Normal moles are common small brown blemishes or growths on the skin that appear in the first decades of life in almost everyone. Atypical moles are unusual benign moles which resemble melanoma and indicate an increased risk. Melanoma is a skin cancer which often looks like and irregularly-shaped, multicolored, or inflamed (red or purple) mole (See Skin Cancer). Our team of skin care experts can determine whether or not your mole is of concern, and if so, will work with you to devise a treatment plan.
